The monk has been identified as Rev. Mahayaye-Vineetha Thero, a 32-year-old Sri Lankan national residing in the US. The arrests were made during an operation conducted on Jun. 13 at the Revere Hotel in Boston’s Bay Village area as part of “Operation Red Card”, an initiative aimed at disrupting sex trafficking networks during the FIFA World Cup period. According to the Boston Police, the operation was designed to identify individuals who advertise women and children on commercial sex websites. Advertisement Police stated that all 07 suspects, including the monk, have been charged with soliciting sex for a fee before the Central Boston Municipal Court. The monk had served as a Buddhist chaplain at Tufts University and is reported to have resigned from the position following the incident. He was appointed as the university’s Buddhist chaplain in Dec. 2024 and had been involved in guiding the institution’s Buddhist meditation community, conducting meditation programmes, and delivering Dhamma sermons. Born in Sri Lanka, he reportedly entered the Buddhist monastic order at the age of 10 and later obtained a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School in May 2022. The National System Operator (NSO) has submitted a preliminary investigation report to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) on the sudden islandwide power outage that occurred on the 17th. The report states that at around 11.43 a.m. that day, 187 megawatts (MW) of electricity being supplied by the first generating unit of the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai was lost from the system within 450 milliseconds. Consequently, the frequency of the electricity system dropped rapidly to 48.75 hertz, and the entire power system collapsed within 4.1 seconds of the incident, according to the report. The National System Operator has also stated that all five stages of the Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) mechanism, which automatically disconnects electricity loads to maintain system stability when the frequency drops, were activated during the incident. Advertisement As a result, 449.2 MW of electricity supply was disconnected. This was equivalent to 39.6% of the total electricity generation of 1,135 MW recorded before the system collapsed, the report states. However, the report points out that these measures were insufficient to prevent the complete collapse of the power system. In addition to the generating units at the Norochcholai Power Plant, generating units at the Victoria, Kotmale, Randenigala, Samanalawewa, Lakshapana and several other hydropower plants were also shut down after their protection systems were activated, according to the report. Following the collapse of the power system, the National System Operator immediately commenced restoration operations. It took five hours and 15 minutes to restore the entire transmission system, the report states. The restoration process was initiated using four main systems. These were the Kotmale and Victoria power plants under the Mahaweli system; the New Laxapana and Wimalasurendra hydropower plants under the Laxapana system; Samanalawewa and Kukule Ganga under the Samanalawewa/Southern system; and the Kelanitissa power complex under the Colombo system. Advertisement According to the report, all major substations had been restored by 4.58 p.m. The restoration of the entire national transmission system took five hours and 15 minutes, it adds. The National System Operator has also noted that technical problems and operational delays were encountered at certain power plants during the restoration process. In particular, a delay occurred when an attempt was made to restart a generating unit at the Yugadanavi Power Plant due to a technical problem in one of its auxiliary systems, the report states. However, the preliminary report has not yet established the specific underlying cause of the sudden loss of power from the first generating unit at the Norochcholai Power Plant. The National System Operator has stated that a detailed report on the incident will be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka in due course.
