Veteran musician and music director Galagedara Abdul Haq, whose melodies have remained popular with music lovers for decades, was felicitated at the recently concluded ‘Brilliant 50 Awards 2026’, held at the BMICH.
The award was presented by UD Services, the event organising company behind the awards, in recognition of Haq’s contribution to the local music industry. Along with the award, UD Services also made a cash donation to the veteran musician.
Abdul Haq felicitated at ‘Brilliant 50 Awards’
Haq created melodies for a number of evergreen songs, including ‘Chandana Allen Nala,’ ‘Hitinna Poddak Hitinna,’ ‘Aluth Kalawak’ and ‘Dakina Dasune,’ which became popular during the early 1970s and continue to be remembered by music lovers today.
A copy of the forthcoming biography of Abdul Haq, titled ‘Wiyapath Nowana Hanguna Bambara,’ was also presented on stage during the event.
Upul Devapriya, chief organiser of the Brilliant 50 Awards and author of the biography, told the gathering that the book would be launched shortly in Colombo.
The launch is also expected to feature a special musical session celebrating Haq’s work, with veteran artistes Keerthi Pasquel, Janaka Wickremasinghe and Kumarasiri Pathirana performing some of his popular songs.
The event thus not only recognised Abdul Haq’s contribution to Sri Lankan music, but also brought attention to the musical legacy captured in his forthcoming biography.
