Following the presence of globally renowned canine 'Aloka during the 'Ehipassiko' peace walk, a local canine had come under spotlight for similar reasons.

The canine known as ‘Subramaniam’, has voluntarily joined the annual 'Pada Yathra' from Jaffna to Kataragama, attracting widespread public attention across Sri Lanka, particularly in the Eastern Province.

The dog has reportedly been travelling alongside devotees for around 33 days, drawing crowds along the pilgrimage route and gaining significant popularity on social media.

According to the leader of the pilgrimage group - 'Jayavel Swami', the canine joined the devotees of its own accord while they were passing through the Mulliyawalai area in Mullaitivu and has remained with them throughout the journey.

Believing it to be a blessing from Lord Murugan, devotees have named the canine as ‘Subramaniam’, tied a cloth around its neck and marked its forehead with holy ash and kumkum.

When the canine fell mildly ill in the Trincomalee area, devotees had also arranged veterinary treatment.

Although dogs are usually inclined towards meat and fish, pilgrims say ‘Subramaniam' has spent the past 32 days consuming only biscuits, milk, bread and vegetarian meals offered by devotees.

Pilgrims further noted that the canine’s perseverance and companionship throughout the demanding journey have served as a source of encouragement and spiritual inspiration to fellow devotees.

The story has drawn comparisons with ‘Aloka’, the globally known canine that accompanies Vietnamese-born Ven. Pannakara Thero and other monks during the the internationally recognised 'Walk for Peace', that has continued to capture headlines globalwide.
