MONROVIA, 19 February 2024 – UNICEF is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Andy Brooks as the new Representative to Liberia, effective 19th February 2024. Mr. Brooks brings over three decades of experience in the promotion and protection of children’s rights, gained across diverse humanitarian and development contexts, both at regional and country level.

Mr. Brooks, a citizen of the United Kingdom, possesses an unwavering commitment to children's well-being and a proven track record of impactful interventions. His extensive career with UNICEF spans over 20 years, marked by leadership roles in various field offices, including Senegal, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Regional Office for West and Central Africa.

Most recently, Mr. Brooks served as the Regional Advisor for East and Southern Africa, overseeing child protection initiatives across 21 countries. He gained a profound understanding of regional dynamics and a firm belief in collaborative engagement and partnership. Prior to this, he directly addressed child protection and rights challenges in conflict, post-disaster, and development settings, including Liberia.

“I am honoured to serve as UNICEF’s Representative in Liberia and contribute to ensuring that every child reaches their full potential,” Mr. Brooks said upon assuming his duties. “I understand the unique challenges and opportunities facing children in Liberia, and I am committed with my team to working closely with the government and partners to see how UNICEF can best support them.”

Mr. Brooks holds an M.A./Cantab in English Literature from Cambridge University and a master’s in social work from Nottingham University, reflecting an experience devoted to both frontline practice and informed advocacy. He brings a blend of cultural perspectives, having been born and raised in Burundi, and is eager to learn more about the Liberian context.

UNICEF Liberia welcomes Mr. Brooks and looks forward to his leadership in advancing the well-being of all children in the country.
