Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant General Nilantha Premaratne, has visited the family of the late Captain U.G.A.S. Samaranayake, a recipient of the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya (PWV), the highest gallantry decoration of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces.

According to the Sri Lanka Army, the Commander, accompanied by Army Seva Vanitha Unit President Vindya Premaratne, visited the family of Captain Samaranayake, who served in the 9th Battalion of the Gemunu Watch.

Captain Samaranayake was killed on March 2, 2009, during military operations in Puthukkudiyiruppu.

The Army said the officer sustained gunshot wounds and severe injuries during the fighting but continued to engage in combat despite his critical condition, helping protect the lives of fellow soldiers.

In recognition of his bravery and service, Captain Samaranayake was posthumously awarded the Parama Weera Vibhushanaya.

During the visit, the Army Commander inquired into the well-being of the late officer’s family, including his wife, Gayani Nandisiri.

Lieutenant General Premaratne also reiterated the Army’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of families of military personnel who lost their lives in service, assuring them of continued support and assistance.

The Sri Lanka Army said the visit was part of its efforts to honour fallen military personnel and recognise their service and sacrifices. (Newswire)
