Sri Lanka finished third at the 14th Asian Senior Netball Championship (ANC), which concluded last Saturday in Hong Kong, marking a disappointing setback for the country’s netball programme. The six-time ANC winners secured third place after defeating Malaysia 65-60 in a closely contested playoff. This marked only the third time Sri Lanka had finished third in the history of the championship, following similar results in 1993 and 2005. Singapore retained the Asian title after defeating host nation Hong Kong 57-33 in the final. It was Singapore’s fifth Asian Championship title. Hong Kong, who had won the title only once previously in 1993, produced a major upset by reaching the final and by doing so, secured qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney for the first time as first runners-up, alongside champions Singapore. Sri Lanka’s campaign began strongly, with victories over Malaysia (66-52), India (100-34), and Maldives (78-33). The team drew 57-57 with Hong Kong and lost 62-51 to Singapore in the preliminary round. Sri Lanka then lost 82-54 to Singapore in the semi-final before recovering to beat Malaysia 65-60 in the third-place playoff. Netball experts have expressed concern over Sri Lanka’s decline from its long-standing position among Asia’s leading teams and have called for urgent attention to the factors behind the setback. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka head coach Somitha de Alwis returned to the country yesterday, completing her four-month tenure with the national team. Final Standings: 1. Singapore 2. Hong Kong 3. Sri Lanka 4. Malaysia 5. Maldives 6. India 7. Pakistan 8. Thailand 9. Chinese Taipei 10. Japan 11. South Korea
