Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has dispatched the tenth unit of its indigenously manufactured 3300 horsepower AC-AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on February 21, 2026, marking a significant milestone in Indian locomotive exports.

BLW received an export order for 10 units of these 3300 HP locomotives for Mozambique, supplied through RITES Limited under a manufacturing and export contract. The first two units were sent in June 2025, followed by the third in September, the fourth in October, and the fifth on December 12, 2025. Subsequent deliveries included the sixth on December 15, 2025, the seventh on January 8, 2026, the eighth on January 23, and the ninth on February 17, 2026.

These locomotives operate on the Cape gauge (1067 mm) and can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. They feature internationally benchmarked, driver-friendly amenities such as a refrigerator, hot plate, mobile holder, and a modern cabin design aimed at enhancing operator comfort and operational efficiency.

Located in Varanasi, BLW is a production unit of Indian Railways that is emerging as a major hub for locomotive manufacturing and exports. Since 2014, BLW has exported locomotives to countries including Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Mozambique, supporting the development of their railway systems.

These exports align with the “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives, demonstrating Indian Railways’ ability to design, manufacture, and supply rolling stock suited to varied gauge systems globally. Through these efforts, Indian Railways assists partner countries in upgrading rail infrastructure while reinforcing India’s position as a dependable exporter of railway rolling stock and related services.

BLW’s success in locomotive exports reflects India’s advancing technological self-reliance and expanding influence in the global railway equipment market.
