Bangladesh Under-19 kept their semifinal hopes alive in the ongoing ACC U-19 Men’s Asia Cup with a 45-run victory over Sri Lanka in their second Group B match at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman on Saturday.
Sent in to bat, Bangladesh posted 245 in 49.4 overs, with Ahsan Al Mumin top-scoring with 82 off 98 balls and opener SK Jarif Siyam contributing 59.
Bangladesh appeared well placed to post a bigger total after reaching 208 for four, but another batting collapse saw them lose their last six wickets for just 37 runs.
Sethmika Seneviratne led Sri Lanka’s bowling attack with four wickets for 52 runs, while Gimhan Mendis and Kaushika Kumarasinghe claimed three and two wickets respectively.
In reply, Sri Lanka were in the hunt at 158 for four, thanks largely to Senuja Wekunagoda’s 85 off 95 balls. However, following his dismissal, they failed to keep up with the required run rate and lost wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for 200 in 46.1 overs.
Tafiul Alam Tamim, Sheikh Atiqur Rahman, Rubay Islam Rizon and Robiul Hasan Anik took two wickets apiece for Bangladesh.
In the day’s other match, Afghanistan, who had crushed Bangladesh by 113 runs in their opening game, hammered Malaysia by 10 wickets to move closer to a semifinal berth.
Bangladesh will face Malaysia in their final group match, while Afghanistan take on Sri Lanka on Monday. The results of the two matches will determine the Group B semifinalists, with the top two teams advancing to the last four.
