Barbara passed away peacefully following a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She fought valiantly and remained gracious and upbeat even at the very end. Barbara is survived by her partner of over 30 years, Ted Ichino, and two sisters, Betsy Baker and Linda Olivieri.

Barbara graduated from St. Lawrence University with a degree in mathematics and moved to California, where she spent 40 years working in aerospace for TRW. She rose to the level of Project Manager, and worked on a variety of classified government projects.

Barbara loved to travel. After initially focusing on Europe, she decided that this could wait until her waning years. Accordingly, she and Ted took several trips to Africa: two magnificent safaris and a trip to Morocco whose highlight was a hair-raising visit to the Souk Al-Hadra, a Bedouin open market that periodically emerges from the desert sands near the coastal city of Essaouira. Sprinkled in were a number of visits to different regions of France as well as trips to Italy, Dubai & Sri Lanka, and Peru. With friends, Barbara traveled to Vietnam, Turkey, Italy, Spain and Portugal, and, more locally, to New England and Nova Scotia. She and Ted often traveled to Mexico and stayed near pyramid sites, on trips that Barbara planned. Barbara could never have enough maps!

After she retired, Barbara began taking French lessons. Her former French professor from El Camino College started an advanced French class, and Barbara would spend many happy hours working on obscure verb conjugations and recondite points of French grammar.

The photograph was taken a few days before her death. It captures her lovely and indomitable spirit more clearly than any photograph taken in her prime. The quality of her being dominates the shot, and the cluttered background and her painfully twisted body fade into insignificance.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in Barbara’s honor can be made to the LAist radio station (formerly KPCC), LACMA, or to a charity of your choice.
