The Cabinet has approved a proposal to establish an Upper Watershed Management Authority to protect and manage environmentally sensitive watershed areas in Sri Lanka.
The move follows concerns over environmental damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which reportedly destroyed 34% of sensitive natural forest areas in the Central Highlands and affected ecosystems linked to seven major river basins.
The proposed authority will focus on developing and implementing a long-term conservation programme, while a technical expert committee will be appointed to define its structure and functions and prepare the required legislation.
