The Polonnaruwa Railway Station has been renovated at a cost of approximately Rs. 35 million with financial support from businessman Dudley Sirisena’s Araliya Group.
The upgraded railway station was handed over for public use today (03) under the “Dream Destination” national programme, which aims to renovate and improve facilities at 100 railway stations across Sri Lanka.
The programme is being implemented under the guidance of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Railways and with financial and entrepreneurial support from the private sector.
Under the Polonnaruwa project, the existing railway station building was renovated while a range of passenger facilities was upgraded.
The improvements include passenger waiting areas, railway baggage storage facilities, facilities for clergy, and upgraded amenities for male and female passengers.
The government’s “Dream Destination” initiative seeks to modernise 100 railway stations across the country, improving facilities while providing passengers with a more comfortable and efficient railway service. (Newswire)
