Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde accused opposition leaders of spreading false narratives and resorting to slander and defamation in an effort to undermine the ruling government, stating the public would once again reject them if they persisted. He made these remarks during a press conference on October 17.

Shinde alleged that opposition leaders were struggling to accept their loss of power after being rejected by voters on three occasions. He said, “Opposition leaders are busy spreading false narratives. Having been rejected by the public three times, they are now restless, like fish out of water, as they struggle to come to terms with being out of power.”

He condemned personal attacks against those in power, declaring that such attempts “are unacceptable” and would not succeed. “Just because they are no longer in power, they seek to undermine those who are currently in power by resorting to slander and defamation. This is unacceptable. Such attempts will never succeed,” Shinde added.

Highlighting India’s position on the global stage, Shinde stated, “This is neither Nepal, Sri Lanka, nor Bangladesh; this is a new India—a capable and powerful India. Anyone who attempts such things will be taught a lesson by the public.”

He also reiterated that the opposition had lost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi three times and warned that continuing their current approach would lead to further defeats. “They have already lost to Modi-ji three times, and if they continue behaving this way, the public will defeat them again and again,” Shinde said.

These comments come amidst controversy surrounding calls for regime change and allegations of efforts to destabilise the Modi government through protests rather than through electoral means. Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan described the protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 16 as a “fight for regime change.” Additionally, All India Students’ Association president Neha Bora referenced the Gen Z movement in Bangladesh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the Congress and opposition-linked activists over these developments, accusing them of attempting to create instability akin to that in Bangladesh through street protests instead of pursuing government change via elections.
