The 93‑year‑old colourful figure, Gajanayake Nilame Leslie Asmadala, who graced the historic Esala Perahera of the Kandy Dalada Maligawa, has passed away.
He was appointed Gajanayake Nilame by former Diyawadana Nilame Neeranjan Wijeyaratne in 1995, when Nissanka Warakaulla retired from service.
Before his appointment, he served as the lay trustee of the historic Danakirigala Rajamaha Viharaya at Mawanella.
The former Gajanayake Nilame was recommended by the then Malwatte Mahanayake, the Venerable Rambukwelle Sri Vippassi Thera.
Although the Gajanayake Nilame is seen in full traditional regalia during the historic Perahera, the position carries great responsibility throughout the eleven days of the festival. He leads the entire group of elephants and tuskers.
A dignified personality he will be missed in the 2026 Perahera, scheduled for August.
