A series of diplomatic, political and security developments were reported on Wednesday across South Asia, Europe, the United States and the Middle East. The updates included talks between India and Sri Lanka, protests in Pakistan, election results involving Indian-American candidates in the US, and fresh violence in Ukraine.

Bangladesh observed ‘July Mass Uprising Day’ as it opened a memorial museum at the official residence of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, while London saw a stabbing incident in Covent Garden and a survey that pointed to rising racism in the National Health Service. In the Middle East, US President Donald Trump said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could come as early as Wednesday.

In Colombo, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Sri Lanka’s top leadership and discussed issues of mutual interest. The two sides also reviewed Indian-assisted projects and exchanged agreements on an Indian line of credit worth USD 350 million to support reconstruction in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh inaugurated a memorial museum at Hasina’s official residence for victims of violence during the anti-government protests in 2024 that toppled her government. The event took place amid tightened nationwide security.

In Pakistan, supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan staged protest rallies in several parts of the country to mark three years of his imprisonment. The protests were held despite a police crackdown.

A British media report published on Wednesday said a former Pakistani state minister, arrested in the UK on sexual assault charges relating to young girls, contested and won an election in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir while on police bail.

In London, the Metropolitan Police said four men aged between 34 and 52 were stabbed in Covent Garden, a popular tourist area in the British capital. A woman was arrested in the case.

A new survey also found that racism is on the rise in the UK’s National Health Service, with non-white medical staff facing abuse such as ‘Dirty foreigners’ and ‘monkey’.

In the United States, Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar lost the Democratic primary from Michigan’s 13th District to Donavan McKinney, a candidate backed by the socialist leaders of the party.

In Washington state’s seventh district, five-term member Pramila Jayapal won easily and is set to face Republican Nirav Sheth in the November election to the US Congress. In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey declared August 15 as ‘India Day’, recognising the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the state and urging residents to observe it fittingly.

A US lawmaker also voiced concern over amendments proposed by India to its laws governing foreign donations received by NGOs, trusts, educational institutions and religious organisations. The lawmaker said the move could affect bilateral relations.

In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed 17 people and wounded dozens. He said Ukraine’s depleted air defences failed to stop any of Moscow’s incoming missiles overnight.

In the Middle East, Trump said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could come as early as Wednesday, as Iran and Oman moved closer to an agreement on the waterway. He said such a deal could ease pressure on the global economy and potentially help end the war.

Overall, Wednesday’s developments ranged from India-Sri Lanka discussions on bilateral projects and reconstruction support to political protests in Pakistan, election updates in the US, security-related incidents in Bangladesh and London, and major international developments in Ukraine and the Strait of Hormuz.
