Colombo, Oct. 28 (Daily Mirror) - Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has stressed the importance of using artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology to improve Sri Lanka’s healthcare system.
He highlighted the need to use modern technology to monitor diseases, assess health risks caused by climate change, improve disaster preparedness and expand access to healthcare services.
The Minister made these remarks while representing Sri Lanka at the Fifth Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference (MC-5), which began today (October 28) at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.
The conference is jointly organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Government of Thailand. Dr. Jayatissa was also elected Vice-Chair of the conference.
Addressing the conference, the Minister said global progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals had been slower than expected. He noted that AI and other digital technologies could help countries respond to climate-related health risks and deliver public health services more efficiently.
He also highlighted the importance of helping developing countries access modern technology, particularly those facing shortages of resources and expertise. He called for stronger regional cooperation to share technology, exchange knowledge and improve technical skills.
Sri Lanka was also represented by Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Engineer (Dr.) Sanath Panawana, a member of the Public Service Commission, and officials from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Thailand.
