The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Union has warned of an increased risk of leptospirosis (rat fever), urging the public to take preventive measures.

Speaking at a media briefing, the association’s Treasurer M.A.C. Prasath said the disease, caused by the Leptospira bacteria found in rat urine, remains one of the country’s most common infectious diseases and has a relatively high fatality rate.

He said farmers, workers exposed to muddy environments, drain cleaners, plantation workers and children playing in abandoned paddy fields or marshy areas are among those at the highest risk. People bathing in stagnant water, ponds and reservoirs were also advised to exercise caution.

Prasath urged those working in muddy environments to obtain the preventive antibiotic Doxycycline under medical advice. He said the medication is available free of charge through Medical Officer of Health (MOH) offices and Public Health Inspectors.

He also noted that the early symptoms of leptospirosis, including fever, headache, body aches and eye pain, are similar to those of dengue. He urged anyone experiencing such symptoms to seek immediate medical attention instead of self-medicating or delaying treatment. (Newswire)
