Team India has played half of its matches in the current season of the World Test Championship. The team is in 5th place with 48.15% points. India is scheduled to play a 2-Test match series against Sri Lanka starting August 15. Read on to find out what India's equations are to reach the final and what impact the series against Sri Lanka will have on the team's hopes.
To reach the final, it is necessary to be in the top-2. If India win its remaining nine matches, it will have 74.07 point percentage (PCT) and a top-two finish will most likely be confirmed. It has to be noted that there isn't a particular percentage which will guarantee a spot in the final, with other results also being important.
If India lose even one match, it will have 68.52%. In this situation, the Indian team will have to depend on the results of teams like Australia and South Africa. If India lose two matches, the path to the WTC 2025-27 final will get even more complicated.
If they lose to Sri Lanka, they might fall behind Pakistan as well
There are five possible results for the Sri Lanka tour. If Team India win the series 2-0, their points will be 57.58%. During this time, if the Australian team defeats Bangladesh in even one match, India will drop to fourth place.
On the other hand, in case of a 0-2 loss, the Indian team's points will be 36.36%, and they will fall below Sri Lanka. From here, the path to the final will become extremely difficult. In this situation, India might fall behind Pakistan in the points table. However, for this, Pakistan would need to register a 3-0 victory over England.
9 matches remaining; 3 series to play
The Indian team has to play nine matches in the current cycle. These include two matches against Sri Lanka, two matches against New Zealand, and five matches against Australia in home series.
After the Sri Lanka tour, Team India is scheduled to tour New Zealand in November. Following that, they will host Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home.
Clean sweep by South Africa caused damage
Team India, captained by Shubman Gill, started its campaign with a tour of England. The team drew the 5-match series there 2-2. After returning from England, they defeated West Indies 2-0 in home conditions. Everything was fine until then.
However, last year, WTC champions South Africa whitewashed India 2-0 in India. This is where the Indian team fell behind in the points table.
