Sri Lanka’s Esala Perahera will return to Kandy from 18 to 28 August 2026, bringing ten nights of traditional processions, cultural performances and religious ceremonies to the country’s hill capital.
Recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s most significant cultural and religious festivals, Esala Perahera combines two long-standing traditions – a procession dedicated to the island’s guardian deities and the Dalada Perahera, which honours the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth).
The 2026 programme begins with the Kap Situveema ceremony on 18 August, followed by five nights of Kumbal Perahera and four nights of Randoli Perahera. The celebrations conclude with the Grand Randoli Perahera on 27 August, before the Diya Kepeema water-cutting ceremony takes place on 28 August at the Mahaweli River.
The processions feature traditional dancers, drummers, musicians, fire performers, flag bearers and decorated elephants, drawing visitors from across Sri Lanka and overseas.
For visitors attending the festival, Jetwing Kandy Gallery, A Luxury Reserve, located in Gurudeniya along the Mahaweli River, offers accommodation approximately 10 minutes from central Kandy. The property provides convenient access to the festival while overlooking the location where the closing water-cutting ceremony is held.
Hashan Cooray, Director – Marketing and Development, Jetwing Hotels , said:
Hashan Cooray “Guests can experience one of Sri Lanka’s important cultural festivals while enjoying a peaceful stay close to Kandy and the Mahaweli River.”
The Esala Perahera remains one of Sri Lanka’s key cultural events, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the country’s traditions, religious heritage and performing arts.
