Lalkantha holds talks with Pakistan HC Sri Lanka Mirror

A meeting was held yesterday (May 25) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation between Minister - K. D. Lalkantha and Pakistan High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Major General (R) - Dr. Nayyar Naseer.

During the discussion, the High Commissioner said both Sri Lanka and Pakistan are agricultural countries with significant potential to further strengthen cooperation in agriculture, livestock production, and food security.

He noted that Pakistan holds a leading position in livestock and dairy production and expressed readiness to provide unconditional support to Sri Lanka, particularly in areas such as sugar, vegetables, fruits, and premium basmati rice varieties.

The High Commissioner also pointed out that Pakistan’s Ministry of Agriculture was renamed the “Ministry of National Food Security and Research” in 2010, and said that agricultural challenges in Pakistan are more related to water management than water scarcity.

He further extended an invitation for the Minister to join the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s planned visit to Pakistan at the end of June, including visits to centres of excellence and research and development institutions.

He added that the last Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries was signed in 2010 and stressed the need for new agreements covering coconut, pineapple, livestock production, and capacity building.

Minister Lalkantha said Pakistan’s approach to agriculture under the concept of food security serves as an important model for Sri Lanka.

He also thanked Pakistan for extending assistance without expecting political gain and said there are no obstacles to signing new MoUs, adding that bilateral cooperation could be further strengthened in the future.
