Lucky No. 7: Rockland Distilleries The Spirits Business

Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin from Sri Lanka’s Rockland Distilleries has been heralded as the world’s best gin at a renowned blind-tasting competition.

Tenacity and passion for spirits have been key to Rockland Distilleries’ success over the past century. Founded in 1924 on a family estate, the Sri Lankan company is now in the capable hands of fourth-generation family members.

Recently, the distiller’s Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin was awarded the Revelation Gin Trophy for Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin, marking its place as the world’s best gin at the Spirits Selection by the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, a renowned global blind-tasting competition.

Judged by an international panel of experts from more than 50 countries, the competition is known for its rigorous standards, tight quality controls, and capped medal rates. Securing such high recognition is testament to Colombo No.7’s craftsmanship and quality.

“We are deeply humbled and honoured to receive this recognition at such a prestigious global competition,” says Amal de Silva Wijeyeratne, managing director of Rockland Distilleries.

“Colombo No.7 represents a proud Sri Lankan story, one rooted in tradition, reimagined for the world. This award is a tribute to our team’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship, and to the enduring legacy of our family’s heritage.”

Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin was inspired by a World War II-era recipe that was revived by Rockland Distilleries as a tribute to Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, and distilling. The gin is crafted with several botanicals native to the country, including cinnamon, curry leaves, ginger, and coriander, in addition to angelica, liquorice, and juniper.

The result is a gin bursting with aromas of cinnamon, candied ginger, and juniper resin, leading to layered flavours of black pepper, curry-leaf savouriness, coriander, citrus, and light herbal mint. The finish is long, spicy, and refreshingly dry.

Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin is distilled and bottled in the UK to remain true to the brand’s Sri Lankan-inspired recipe. The gin is distributed in nine regions via leading distributors and partners in duty free.

With this globally acclaimed recognition now attached to its name, Colombo No.7 Ration Navy Dry Gin is more committed than ever before to elevating the reputation of Sri Lankan craftsmanship worldwide.
