The National Agrarian Federation announced that due to the recent flood situation, 253,125 acres of paddy cultivation have been completely destroyed, and a further 420,000 acres have been partially damaged. Anuradha Tennakoon, the Chairman of the Federation, conveyed this information while speaking at a press conference in Colombo yesterday. The agricultural damage is extensive across several regions. For instance, over 200 acres of paddy fields in Tispanepura, under the Tambuttegama Divisional Secretariat, were entirely ruined after the Kala Oya overflowed near the Niraviya Bridge, causing severe distress to the farmers. Similarly, many paddy fields in the Polonnaruwa District have been submerged and destroyed by the excessive floodwaters. Beyond field crops, the floods have significantly impacted livestock and vegetable farming. Farmers in the Serunuwara area of Trincomalee reported that a large number of cattle have died due to the flooding. They emphasised that this unexpected loss has completely halted their livelihoods. In the Thirappane area, farmers stated that their green chilli cultivations have been wiped out by the continuous heavy rainfall.
