The main gunman who had recently gunned down a restaurant owner and his wife in the Nagoda area of Kalutara has been arrested by the Kalutara District Crime Division. The shooting took place in front of the restaurant in Nagoda on Oct. 09. The 54-year-old restaurant owner died in the attack, while his wife, who was injured in the shooting, later succumbed later while receiving treatment at the hospital. Two unidentified gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle carried out the shooting before fleeing the scene. Police subsequently launched an investigation into the incident. An investigation involving telephone analysis reports and CCTV footage enabled the Kalutara District Crime Division to establish that the main gunman was staying in the Kaduwela area. Accordingly, the suspect was arrested while staying at a house in Ranala, Kaduwela. Investigations have revealed that the suspect had been hiding at the house of a relative of an organised criminal gang member known as ‘Dippitigoda Shakthi’. Police said the arrested suspect is a 32-year-old resident of Badulla. Information has also emerged that the gunman carried out the shooting at the request of an individual known as ‘Kalutara Naveen’. Investigations have further revealed that another person had supplied the suspect with a T-56 firearm for the murder and that, following the killing, the firearm was handed over to another person near the Dodangoda interchange on the Southern Expressway. The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court.
