Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, icons of Sri Lankan cricket, share a rich history on the cricket field. The pair holds the record for the highest partnership for any wicket in Tests, an astronomical 624-run stand for the third wicket. The duo scripted the unbelievable feat against South Africa in Colombo in 2006, and it is hard to imagine any pair overtaking it in the future.

While this is a record stand, Sangakkara and Jayawardene have been part of numerous other flourishing partnerships throughout their careers. Interestingly, this is not limited to the pitch, as beyond it the two cricket legends have collaborated on multiple business ventures. In this article, we take a look at it.

The former cricketers, along with chef Dharshan Munidasa, own Ministry of Crab, a restaurant which they began in Colombo in 2011. Over the years, the venture has expanded globally with outlets now in Shanghai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Singapore, and the Maldives. The restaurant specialises in seafood like Sri Lanka's legendary mud crab and freshwater prawns. It has also been ranked in Asia’s Top 50 Restaurants on multiple occasions.

They even opened a branch in Mumbai, which was in association with Gourmet Investments, but it no longer operates.

"Both Kumar and I are foodies. Whenever we travel, we seek out good eateries. When we started Ministry of Crab, the idea was that Sri Lankan lagoon crabs, mostly exported, should get their identity in the country. We initially thought it wouldn’t get local diners as the price was a bit high, but everyone loved it," Jayawardene had told Forbes India in an interview in 2016.

Both cricketers have also invested in Atman Group, a Sri Lanka-based private equity and investment firm that focuses on emerging investment opportunities across Asia. The group has invested in multiple sectors, ranging from hospitality, leisure, agriculture, real estate, and renewable energy.

The Atman Group invested in Taprobane Seafood Group in 2021, a Sri Lankan aquaculture company. Both Sangakkara and Jayawardena had reportedly also joined the company's Board of Directors.

According to the company's official website, they are also part of the Board of Directors at Sino Lanka Power Gen (SLPG), a joint venture between Sino Lanka and Atman Group.

The cricket legends also launched Providore, an online grocery retail store, in the island nation in 2021. As reported by the Sunday Times, the company entered into a tri-party collaboration with Groceries by Granada and Dropoff.lk, also online grocery vendors, in 2023 to form the largest online grocery retail group in the country.
