Another long distance hiking trail!
After a week of surfing, lying down, and soaking up the east coast sun in peak season, we were ready to get moving and also get away from some pretty heavily touristic towns. We had discussed doing a few hikes whilst on our loosly planned trip, so naturally I found a 300km long thru hike that we could do…
The Pekoe Trail is a 300km long-distance hiking path in Sri Lanka, named after the high-grade black tea produced in the region. The trail is inspired by the tea industry and the network of paths used to transport tea leaves in the past. It’s a new trail which only officially launched in March 2023! Rumour has it only around 50 hikers have actually walked end-to-end?
Elev- 1450ft- about 145 elephants* or about 440 metres
Snack of the day- cashew nut fudge & samosas
Nice things- some kids gave us flowers, got surrounded by puppies, clear quartz crystal on trail!
Accomodation- we stayed at the Green House Bungalow for around 16USD (for 2 people!) the host cooked us dinner – rice and curry- for 5USD each
Animal encounters- snails, birds, butterflies, snakes, lizards, dogs- most are harmless but can growl a bit if you’re walking near their house- leeches- not too dramatic today, can be flicked off, but would recommend leech socks from the big hiking store in either Kandy or Ella (haven’t actually worn them yet, so stay tuned for the fashion shoot)
*according to google the average elephant is about ten feet tall=maths be mathing

I’m Rae (trail name Clash!) I’m sometimes a nurse, sometimes a feral thru-hiker. In summer 2022 I dived into the thru-hiking world and spent 5.5 blissful, tough, weird months on the PCT. I caught the trail bug and hiked New Zealand’s Te Araroa in the same season. I've since been living on a queer & vegan animal sanctuary in the mountains, working random seasonal jobs in New Zealand, and processing ALL OF THAT WALKING, whilst of course planning the next. In this sunny corner of the internet you can follow my musings, adventures, and general chaos as I share stories, advice, gossips, and all the tales from the thru-hiking world.
