Priyansh Arya suffered a bizarre run-out while playing for India A in a 50-over game against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, his bat getting blocked by wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella's foot at the striker's end after getting involved in a mix-up with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Priyansh Arya suffered a bizarre run-out while playing for India A against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Tuesday, with his bat getting blocked by the foot of wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. The incident took place during the 13th over of the Indian innings after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bat at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
Arya and captain Gaikwad had formed a steady partnership for the third wicket after India A lost openers Prabhsimran Singh (2) and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (14) cheaply – the latter departing for a low score in his first outing since a record-breaking Indian Premier League season with the Rajasthan Royals.
Arya's run-a-ball knock of 32, however, was cut short after he was involved in a major mix-up with captain Gaikwad, both batters getting stranded at the striker's end. Gaikwad had called for a second run after guiding the ball towards deep cover, and had comfortably made it in the end. Arya, however, decided to stay back at the striker's end in the last second, and paid the price.
What's more, the Punjab Kings opener could have dragged his bat past the popping crease before Gaikwad, and would have continued batting as a result. Dickwella's boot, however, came in the way and prevented him from grounding his bat past the crease.
Gaikwad, meanwhile, would go on to play a captain's knock, bringing up a fine century and sharing a 150-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Tilak Varma, who produced a patient 60 off 97 balls. The partnership finally came to an end after Gaikwad was dismissed for 101 off 114 deliveriesby Wanuja Sahan.
Middle-order batters Ayush Badoni (24 off 18) and Suryansh Shedge (26 not out off 14) later chipped in with handy knocks to help India A post a competitive 277/6 on the board.
The 50-over triangular series features Afghanistan A as the third team besides the Indians and the Sri Lankans.
