RIOCOCO, a manufacturer of coconut coir growing substrates, said on September 24, 2026, that it has built what it calls the largest single coco coir production facility in Sri Lanka. The plant is in Katupotha and opened in July 2026.
According to the company, the new site adds production capacity so RIOCOCO can respond to rising orders from commercial growers in markets worldwide. The announcement did not give output figures or investment costs for the facility.
“For twenty-two years we’ve told growers the same thing: the medium has to be consistent every single time,” said Shan Halamba , CEO of RIOCOCO.
“Keeping that promise as we grow means building capacity to support our growing customer base,” Halamba added.
The facility opening comes after other company milestones this year. Halamba marked RIOCOCO’s 22nd anniversary with the full team in Sri Lanka earlier in 2026 and unveiled a commemorative sign on the building that houses the company’s production headquarters.
RIOCOCO has also finished a redesign of its grow bag packaging. The new bags incorporate the company’s original logo alongside updated graphics. RIOCOCO said the design reflects its aim to run an innovative business while holding on to long-standing values of quality, consistency and relationships with customers.
The company makes a range of coco coir products used in greenhouse growing systems and other commercial operations. RIOCOCO says the products are designed to support plant roots and plant development, with the goal of increasing yields while lowering the amount of water and fertilizer growers need.
RIOCOCO markets its products as sustainable, organic and OMRI-certified. Production runs on modern machinery and follows an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system and an ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system.
Growers in 65 countries use RIOCOCO substrates. The company says it supplies coco coir to some of the largest greenhouses growing strawberries , blueberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, melons and eggplants, as well as to medical cannabis facilities around the world. RIOCOCO won six Stevie Awards at the 2024 International Business Awards. In 2023, the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka named it Best Ethical Trading Exporter.
