Rohit Sharma is set to turn out for Mumbai in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, with The Indian Express reporting that the former India captain has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his availability for the domestic 50-over competition in December.

The development comes as India look to give their senior players more opportunities to feature in domestic cricket ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit is expected to join Mumbai after India's three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, scheduled from December 13 to 19.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy league stage begins on December 14 and runs until December 29, meaning the 38-year-old could be available for the latter part of the group stage. The knockout matches are scheduled from January 2 to 8. However, the number of matches he will play for Mumbai remains unclear.

An MCA source told, "He has informed us that he will be playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and to consider him available after India's three-ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. How many matches he will be available for, he will inform us later." ROHIT SHARMA’S MIXED OUTING LAST SEASON

This will be Rohit's second consecutive appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after returning to the competition last season for the first time since 2018. The veteran opener featured in two matches for Mumbai in Jaipur, producing a spectacular performance in his first outing against Sikkim .

Rohit smashed 155 off just 94 deliveries, giving Mumbai a flying start with an innings packed with boundaries and sixes. However, he could not carry that momentum into his next appearance, falling for a golden duck against Uttarakhand two days later.

The two outings offered a glimpse of his destructive batting ability while also underlining the importance of getting more match practice in the 50-over format.

Before his domestic assignment, Rohit is next set to feature in India's five-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning November 4 in Auckland. The senior batter has already started preparations, returning to the nets alongside Virat Kohli ahead of the series.

With the World Cup on the horizon, the New Zealand assignment and subsequent domestic appearances will provide Rohit with valuable opportunities to sharpen his game. - Ends
