Openers Sineth Weeraratne and skipper Dulnith Sigera produced a flawless batting display with unbeaten half-centuries to help Mahanama College make a strong reply against traditional rivals D.S. Senanayake College on the second day of the 20th Battle of the Golds big match played at the SSC yesterday.

At stumps, Mahanama had reached a solid 161 for no loss in reply to their opponent’s first innings total of 344, with both openers frustrating the D.S. Senanayake bowling attack through an unbroken opening partnership.

Resuming the day on their overnight score of 195-4, D.S. Senanayake were hoping to build a massive first innings total and received valuable contributions from skipper Randeesha Bandaranayake and Chanul Athale. The pair added an important 70 runs for the eighth wicket at a crucial stage after D.S. Senanayake had lost wickets in quick succession. Bandaranayake played a composed innings of 48, while Athale chipped in with 47 as D.S. Senanayake eventually posted 344 in 119 overs.

Earlier, Miyuru Bandara (100) had laid the foundation with a superb century, while useful middle-order contributions came from Shevan Welgama, Sithru Gunaratne, Janindu Ranasinghe and Shanel Binushka.

For Mahanama, Sri Lanka youth player and left-arm spinner Chamika Heenatigala emerged as the chief destroyer with an impressive six-wicket haul. Bowling with accuracy and control, Chamika finished with figures of 6 for 100 and played a major role in restricting DSS from reaching a much bigger total.

In reply, Mahanama’s openers came out with positive intent and batted confidently against the D.S. Senanayake bowlers. Sineth was the more aggressive of the two, remaining unbeaten on 83 with seven boundaries and a six, while skipper Dulnith provided excellent support with an unbeaten 72 that included four boundaries and two sixes. The pair negotiated the DSS bowling attack comfortably and ensured Mahanama ended the day in a strong position heading into the final day’s play.
