Four outstanding women were felicitated this year: philanthropist Yogeswari Wijayaratnam, actress Swarna Mallawarachchi, Senior Deputy Director of Customs Shanthini Dinesh and Vice President DFCC Bank Shera Hassen.

The Chief Guest for the occasion was the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lankan Santosh Jha, whose presence spoke of the deep and enduring bonds between India and Sri Lanka’s Tamil community.

The President of the SLTWU, Yalini Cooke, delivering the welcome address, reflected on the importance of International Women’s Day as a moment not merely for celebration, but for reaffirmation, honouring their dedicated service and contributions to the organisation and the wider community.

Keynote speaker Poongkothai Chandrahasan in her address explored the challenges and opportunities facing women in contemporary Sri Lankan society.

Guest of Honour, Prakash Schaffter, gave the vote of thanks acknowledging the many hands that came together to make the event a success.

The evening concluded with dinner and fellowship.

The SLTWU’s International Women’s Day programme stands as a meaningful tribute to the women who shape Sri Lanka’s social fabric, and a reminder that recognition, however long overdue, has the power to inspire generations to come
