A former cloth merchant died at an old-age home in Haryana's Sonipat after a prolonged illness. According to the home, his three daughters did not visit him before his death or attend his funeral. They reportedly watched the last rites over a video call, and one daughter sent ₹5,100 for the funeral expenses. Their version of events has not been made public.

A massive jailbreak occurred at the Theni sub-jail in Thekkampatti, Tamil Nadu, where seventeen inmates escaped after assaulting prison personnel. The prisoners staged a medical emergency by faking an epileptic seizure, luring a warden into their cell before overpowering him and attacking two other wardens. Police have recaptured four prisoners, while seventeen special teams have been formed to track down the remaining thirteen absconding inmates across high-alert districts. Director General of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore and an Inspector General visited the facility to examine potential security lapses. The incident has triggered sharp political criticism from opposition parties including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party, who cited law and order failure and demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister.

Dense white toxic froth has reappeared on the surface of the Yamuna River in Delhi ahead of Chhath Puja. The visuals emerge just a day after the Delhi government carried out the soft launch of a high-profile Yamuna cruise service. Heavy foam was witnessed floating on the river at Kalindi Kunj, raising concerns for devotees scheduled to take ritual dips. Alongside worsening seasonal air pollution, the recurrence of water toxicity has triggered political debate, with the opposition criticising the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over unfulfilled election promises to clean the river. Although defoamers are used as a cosmetic treatment to suppress surface foam, questions remain regarding the fundamental quality of the water.

Seventeen inmates escaped from the Thekkampatti Sub Jail in Tamil Nadu's Theni district after faking illness and attacking guards. Jail officials entered the cell after prisoners claimed an inmate had suffered an epileptic attack, whereupon the inmates assaulted the personnel, injuring a grade two police personnel identified as Thangapandi, before fleeing. Following police raids, four escaped prisoners—Praveen Kumar, Silambarasan, Rajkumar, and Raja Sikandar—were apprehended, while thirteen remain at large. Seventeen special police teams have been deployed across the state to conduct a manhunt, with border checkpoints alerted across districts including Theni, Dindigul, and Usilampatti. The incident has also triggered a political controversy in Tamil Nadu, with the opposition DMK attacking Chief Minister Vijay and the TVK government over the state's law and order situation, pointing out that the jail portfolio is held by the Chief Minister and demanding his resignation, while also announcing a protest on the 31st.

A major standoff has emerged at Jamia Millia Islamia as the university administration issued a final warning to students demanding that they immediately vacate the Ghalib lawn and the Gulistan-e-Ghalib building. The university stated that the demonstration amounts to unlawful assembly and is disrupting economics and political science classes. However, protesting students have continued an indefinite hunger strike launched on October 12, refusing to end their agitation until a firm timeline and date for student union elections are provided. Jamia has not held student body polls since 2006, and despite discussions between administrators and students, no consensus on election dates has been reached.
