SRINAGAR : Sri Lanka defeated England by two wickets in a remarkable run chase in the ODI tri-series in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on Thursday, October 22, reaching a target of 430 with one ball remaining.

England had set a formidable target after scoring 429 for four in their allotted 50 overs, with captain Harry Brook smashing 202 off 116 deliveries. His innings became the highest individual score by an England batter in men’s One-Day Internationals.

Sri Lanka responded with a powerful batting display, led by Pavan Rathnayake, who scored 130, and Avishka Fernando, who narrowly missed a century with 97. Dasun Shanaka also contributed 97 as the visitors kept pace with the demanding run rate.

With the contest finely balanced in the closing overs, Janith Liyanage delivered the decisive blow, finishing unbeaten on 61. He struck a six off the penultimate ball to take Sri Lanka to 430 for eight in 49.5 overs and complete the two-wicket victory.

The result ranks as the second-highest successful run chase in men’s ODI cricket history.
