COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka has officially strengthened its diplomatic presence in the Asia-Pacific region with the opening of its new High Commission in Wellington, New Zealand.

The newly established High Commission of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Wellington was ceremonially inaugurated on May 28, in parallel with the official visit of Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath.

The event was attended by New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Rt. Hon. Winston Peters, who participated as a special guest.

The inauguration ceremony reflected a blend of cultural traditions from both nations.

Proceedings commenced with Sri Lankan religious observances alongside a traditional Māori blessing, symbolizing unity, respect, and shared values between the two countries.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Vijitha Herath emphasized that the establishment of a resident High Commission in New Zealand represents a new chapter in Sri Lanka–New Zealand relations. He noted that the move will significantly enhance diplomatic engagement while opening avenues for closer cooperation in key sectors including trade, education, tourism, and cultural exchange.

The event was attended by senior officials from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Sri Lankan community residing in New Zealand.

Importantly, the new High Commission is expected to deliver tangible benefits to the Sri Lankan diaspora in New Zealand, which exceeds 30,000 people.
