Sri Lanka's Cabinet of Ministers has approved a decision requiring all fresh vegetables and fruits exported to the European Union to be sourced exclusively from farms certified under the Sri Lankan Good Agricultural Practices (SLGAP) guidelines, as well as through registered exporters and approved processing and packaging facilities.
Cabinet Spokesman and Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced the decision during the weekly Cabinet press briefing on May 26.
According to Dr. Jayatissa, the measure is intended to address quality and food safety requirements for agricultural exports to the European market.
The decision follows findings by the Health and Food Safety Regulatory Authority of the European Commission, which reported that agrochemical residue levels detected in some fresh vegetables and fruits exported from Sri Lanka to EU countries exceeded the permitted Maximum Residue Levels and were considered high-risk.
The government stated that stronger testing procedures and food safety mechanisms are needed for Sri Lanka's export-oriented agricultural products in order to avoid future restrictions and challenges in accessing European and other international markets.
As an initial step, the Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation to make exports of fresh vegetables and fruits to the European Union mandatory through SLGAP-certified farms, registered exporters, and certified processing and packaging centres.
