Colombo, Oct. 27 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka’s seafood export earnings declined by 2.03% year-on-year to US$180.81 million during the first nine months of 2026, mainly due to weaker exports of frozen and fresh or chilled fish.
According to the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), frozen fish exports fell by 1.88%, while exports of fresh or chilled fish declined by 9.59%. Ornamental fish exports also dropped by 26.71% during the period.
However, the sector recorded a recovery in September, with seafood exports increasing by 4.01% year-on-year to US$23.61 million, compared with US$22.7 million in September 2025.
Frozen fish exports rose by 15.85% to US$13.96 million during the month, while shrimp exports surged by 207.27% to US$3.38 million.
The September performance indicates stronger demand for selected seafood products, although the cumulative figures show that the industry continued to face challenges during the first nine months of the year.
Expanding access to international markets, maintaining product quality and diversifying seafood products could help improve the sector’s export performance.
