Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute (LNBTI), a degree-awarding institution in Sri Lanka approved by its Ministry of Education, is seeking a UK university partner for its computing programmes to deliver a final year top-up pathway, enabling LNBTI graduates to complete a UK-awarded computing degree. They are seeling a partnership encompassing postgraduate progression, research collaboration and academic staff development.

About Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute

LNBTI is a private university established through a strategic collaboration between leading IT companies from Japan and Sri Lanka. The partnership began in 2001, when Meta techno Inc., a Japanese embedded software development company, established operations in Sri Lanka and began recruiting and training local graduates for specialised software projects, with many subsequently joining its headquarters in Japan.

LNBTI is a recognised degree-awarding institution in Sri Lanka, registered with its Ministry of Education under Section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. It is also an approved Board of Investment (BOI) project, representing a significant Japanese–Sri Lankan investment in the country's higher education sector.

LNBTI seeks to establish a meaningful partnership with a UK university to enhance its academic offerings and provide globally recognised qualifications for its students. The primary focus of the collaboration is the delivery of top-up degree programmes and joint degree programmes in IT and related disciplines.

Collaboration is sought in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology and Information Systems, with scope for curriculum development in artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, cloud computing and other emerging technology areas.

It is looking to collaborate at the bachelor’s degree level, aiming to deliver high-quality undergraduate education.

LNBTI welcomes discussions with recognised, degree-awarding UK universities that have:

Partnership structures can be developed jointly to align with academic regulations and the international strategy of the UK partner.

Expected outcomes from the collaboration

LNBTI aims to develop a partnership for the delivery of top-up and joint degree programmes aligned with its current academic offerings. The top-up degree model allows students to complete their studies at LNBTI in Sri Lanka, providing an affordable pathway to earn a globally recognised degree in a quality academic environment.

Mutual benefits of the collaboration

The partnership provides the UK university with an opportunity to expand its presence in Sri Lanka and engage with a growing market of motivated students seeking internationally recognised qualifications. It will also strengthen academic and cultural exchange, enhancing the university’s global engagement. By combining LNBTI’s strong local presence and expertise with the UK university’s academic strengths and international reputation, the collaboration will create opportunities for innovation, knowledge exchange and the delivery of world-class education.

For LNBTI, the partnership will strengthen its ability to attract high-calibre students seeking globally recognised qualifications through accessible and affordable top-up and joint degree programmes. It will further enhance LNBTI’s position as a leading higher education provider in Sri Lanka, support student enrolment, and provide opportunities to adopt international best practices in curriculum development, teaching and research.

A high-level discussion will take place between the two institutions to explore possibilities. Based on a successful engagement, LNBTI aims to finalise an agreement around late 2026/early 2027.
