Sungrow, a China-based supplier of PV inverters and energy storage systems, has commissioned a 10 MW/40 MWh BESS for WKV Hydro Technics in Galle, Sri Lanka. The system entered commercial operation on 10 September, and it is the largest utility-scale BESS of WKV in the country. It has been built with the PowerTitan 2.0 solution of Sungrow, which combines the battery system and the power conversion system in one block. This design has contributed to a 50% reduction in the grid-connection time. The site lies approximately 500 metres from the sea, and the system has been designed to withstand that corrosive environment for at least 15 years. The BESS will provide peak shaving and frequency regulation to the national grid, where the demand peaks at around 7 p.m. Sri Lanka aims to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, and the need for such support will grow with solar and wind.
