A former active member of the LTTE organization and a person who worked as a driver under Tamil Selvam, the political wing leader of the same organization, has been arrested by immigration officials at Katunayake Airport after being deported from India.
The person arrested is fifty-year-old Kandasamy Krishnakumar, a resident of Sandilipay, Jaffna. He was actively involved with the LTTE organization from 1991 to 1993, serving as Tamil Selvam's driver. After leaving the organization, he fled to Trichy, India, on September 13, 2009. Krishnakumar, who temporarily resided there, continued to work as a driver for a living.
However, his life in India changed on July 20, 2015, due to information provided by neighbors to the country's security forces. Acting on this tip-off, the Tamil Nadu Police arrested him and detained him for ten days for questioning. Subsequently, the Indian court that heard the case ordered him on April 27, 2018, to serve a ten-year prison sentence and pay a fine of Indian Rupees 45,000.
He appealed against the court's decision in 2022, and as a result, he managed to reduce his prison sentence to seven years. After completing his sentence while detained at the Trichy special camp, Kandasamy Krishnakumar was released and subsequently deported to Sri Lanka by Indian authorities.
Accordingly, he was sent to Katunayake Airport on the 26th at 4:55 PM on a SriLankan Airlines flight that departed from Trichy, India. Immediately upon his return to the island after many years, he was taken into custody by immigration department officials on duty at the airport.
