The visit of Thai Deputy Prime Minister Sutumpun to Sri Lanka as the chief guest for the meritorious ceremony of unveiling the Chuda Manikkaya (crest gem) of the Mihintale Mihindu Maha Seya, sparked a heated debate in Parliament. This was due to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Siriwardhana, alleging that proper diplomatic courtesies were not extended during her arrival.
MP Siriwardhana questioned the government in Parliament regarding the lack of a formal diplomatic reception for the Thai Deputy Prime Minister who arrived in the island. He expressed his concern that the diplomatic respect and courtesy shown to her were insufficient.
This criticism received a sharp response from Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Responding to MP Siriwardhana's comments, the Minister stated that this was Parliament, not a tuition class in Mirigama.
The Minister then clarified before the House, pointing out that the Thai Deputy Prime Minister's visit was primarily for the religious ceremony held in Mihintale. Mr. Vijitha Herath further explained that there is a clear distinction between official state visits by foreign leaders and visits undertaken for personal or religious purposes.
The Minister emphasized that traditional official diplomatic receptions and honors are not extended for such religious or private visits. The Foreign Minister also revealed to Parliament how religious affairs are distinguished from official diplomatic functions and what the government's policy is in this regard.
