A new boutique retreat is set to open in the highlands of Sri Lanka in July 2026.

The resort, called Uga Ghiri, is set on the historic grounds of the former Sutherland Estate in the highlands of Ella.

Uga Ghiri is the Uga brand’s third property launch in 18 months, following the openings of Uga Halloowella and Uga Prava.

And it is making a name for itself with design-led properties that are connected to place, heritage and landscape.

On 4ha of terraced hillside in the central highlands, guests at Uga Ghiri will have panoramic views across tea gardens and valleys.

And they are right by Ella’s brick and stone Nine Arch Bridge, which was completed in 1919. It is one of the country’s most recognisable landmarks, and mountain trains still run over it.

+ Uga Ghiri’s main house is a restored manor at the centre of the estate. It has high ceilings and preserved architectural details, blending historic charm with contemporary hospitality.

+ The resort will then have 15 stand-alone villas. They have a floor space of 111sqm, combining contemporary design with subtle Sri Lankan influences that reflect the island’s heritage.

+ Every villa has big windows and Hill Country views.

+ The spa at Uga Ghiri has two treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room, all overlooking Ella’s peaks.

+ Guests can enjoy artisanal tea experiences, hands-on Sri Lankan cooking sessions and guided tastings of Ceylon arrack.

+ Rates are from $1800 per night. ugaresorts.com/ugaghiri/
