The Department of Inland Revenue stated that presenting a valid TIN certificate will be mandatory from tomorrow (November 01) when performing a number of specific tasks, including transactions with banks and financial institutions.
Accordingly, the department states that responsible officers have been instructed to ensure, in accordance with the circular issued to them, that a valid TIN certificate has been submitted by the relevant person before carrying out or completing tasks such as opening an account in a bank or financial institution, obtaining approval for a building plan, registering a motor vehicle, renewing a motor vehicle license, registering land or ownership of land, registering a business, transferring shares of a company incorporated in Sri Lanka when done by an assignee and assignor, and obtaining a credit card.
The Department of Inland Revenue informs the public that every person intending to engage in any of the specified tasks, if they have not already obtained a TIN number, should obtain it immediately and apply for it through the Department of Inland Revenue's e-service.
