The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Model United Nations team again received high honors at the Midwest Model United Nations competition.

The basics: The Midwest conference was held Feb. 22-25 in St. Louis and featured more than 50 countries represented by more than 25 schools. Delegates worked on topics like preventing terrorists from acquiring small arms, sustainable water infrastructure and housing development, securing the rights of Indigenous people and combatting climate change.

About the Titans: Because of pandemic-related disruptions in recent years, a majority of the students on the UW Oshkosh team were first-time participants in MUN—and the rest were taking part for just a second time.

Earning recognition: The UWO team was recognized with 10 delegate and six delegation-wide awards. All six country delegations received awards, which are designated by conference staff based on country awareness, topic knowledge, writing, public speaking, consensus building and diplomatic negotiation.

What they said: Meg Traska, a junior psychology major from Winneconne, was among the outstanding delegate award winners. “Our fairly young team gained a tremendous amount of confidence and hands-on experience with international topics to help us grow as individuals, students and teammates,” she said. “Our team exceeded my expectations with their abilities and knowledge within the conference by winning various awards for their leadership, knowledge and delegation skills across multiple rooms and countries.”

What’s next: The Titans continue their preparations for the national MUN competition April 2-6 in New York City.
