An Indian customer finds a Sri Lankan hotel, chooses a room and reaches the payment page. Giving them a familiar way to pay could make that final step easier.
That is the opportunity behind WEBXPAY ’s cross-border payment offering with Pine Labs , detailed in an announcement on 22 October. The integration brings UPI, Indian cards and net banking to Sri Lankan merchants’ online checkouts.
For hotels, travel operators and online retailers selling to Indian customers, it expands the payment options they can offer through their existing WEBXPAY integrations.
The announced offering includes net banking across more than 100 Indian banks , cards from major Indian issuers, UPI AutoPay, instalment conversions and Credit on UPI.
These are payment options for eligible Indian customers. Their availability does not mean Sri Lankan shoppers automatically gain access to Indian credit or instalment facilities.
The companies say settlement operates on a T+1 basis , generally meaning the next business day after a transaction. Merchant agreements, processing cut-offs and holidays will determine the exact timing.
The integration is already live, according to the announcement. However, businesses should confirm which payment methods are enabled for their accounts and whether any activation steps are required.
Pine Labs and WEBXPAY had discussed their relationship before this announcement. The new detail is the breadth of the payment offering and the regulated arrangement behind it.
The companies describe it as Sri Lanka’s first partnership between payment aggregators under India’s Payment Aggregator–Cross Border framework .
A payment aggregator connects businesses with different ways of accepting money. Here, Pine Labs supplies access to Indian payment methods, while WEBXPAY connects that capability to its Sri Lankan merchant network.
The framework provides a regulated structure for processing cross-border payments. It does not make every transaction free or remove the need for merchant checks and compliance requirements.
For a Sri Lankan business, accepting an international card already provides a route to overseas customers. This offering adds options that Indian buyers may prefer, including paying directly through their bank or using UPI.
That could be useful when someone books accommodation before travelling, pays a tour operator or orders from a Sri Lankan online store.
It also gives developers and businesses another payment capability to work with without building a separate connection to each Indian bank.
Whether that translates into more completed purchases will depend on transaction success rates, checkout design, pricing and customer demand. The announcement provides no transaction volumes or measured increase in sales.
Neither company disclosed merchant charges, currency conversion costs or detailed refund terms in the announcement.
Those details will determine the commercial value for individual businesses. A broader checkout is useful, but merchants still need to understand how much reaches their account, when it arrives and what happens when a customer cancels.
For now, the development gives Sri Lankan businesses another way to collect payments from Indian customers. The practical test will be how smoothly those options work when a real customer reaches the checkout.
