India beat Sri Lanka through super over in third T20I to complete a 3-0 whitewash on Tuesday, July 30 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele After being put in to bat first, the Men in Blue could only manage to score 137/9 in their allotted 20 overs with Shubman Gill top scoring with 39 (37). Riyan Parag (26 off 18) and Washington Sundar (25 off 18) also made valuable contributions. In reply, Sri Lanka finished their innings on 137/8 in their allotted 20 overs as Suryakumar Yadav (2/5) and Rinku Singh (2/3) emerged as unlikely heroes with the ball.

In the Super over, Washington Sundar restricted Sri Lanka to just two runs by dismissing both Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka in just three balls. In reply, captain Suryalkumar Yadav scored a boundary off the first ball itself to win the match. As a result, India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and completed a 3-0 whitewash.

Sri Lanka’s chase got off to a good start as openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched their second fifty-run partnership of the series. The duo added 58 runs for the first wicket off 53 balls. With the game running away, Ravi Bishnoi brought India back into the match as he made Nissanka chip one straight to Riyan Parag at long on. Kusal Perera walked in at number three and denied India any sort of relief adding 52 runs for the second wicket off 39 balls with Mendis.

Bishnoi once again came to India's rescue as he trapped Mendis (43 off 41) in front of the stumps to give India their second breakthrough with Sri Lanka on 110. Washington Sundar further built pressure on Sri Lanka dismissing Wanindu Hasaranga (3 off 4) and Charith Asalanka (0 off 1) off consecutive deliveries, leaving Sri Lanka on 117/4 after 16.4 overs.

The game was on a knife's edge as Sri Lanka required 21 runs off the last three overs. However, a bizarre 12-run over by Khaleel Ahmed, which included five wides, completely turned the game in Sri Lanka's favour. However, there was another twist in the tale as Rinku Singh (2/3) and Suryakumar Yadav (2/5 emerged as the heroes with the ball to help India tie the game.

Earlier, India failed to get off a usual quick-fire start as Yashasvi Jaiswal (10 off 9) got dismissed lbw by Maheesh Theekshana (3/28). After failing to get a good start, captain Suryakumar Yadav demoted himself down the order as he sent in Sanju Samson at number three. However, the 29-year-old got dismissed for his second consecutive duck holing out to deep point against debutant Chamindu Wickramasinghe. Washington Sundar's late flourish help India to cross 130

At the other end, Theekshana got the big wicket of Rinku Singh who also tried to go big on just his second ball and was caught by Matheesha Pathirana leaving India on 14/3 after 3.1 overs. Skipper Suryakumar (8 off 9) also failed to bail his team out of trouble getting dismissed playing his trademark shot over fine leg against Asitha Fernando.

Shivam Dube (13 off 14) walked in at number six and tried to stabilize the innings but got an outside edge against Ramesh Mendis which was caught by Kusal Mendis behind the stumps leaving India in all sorts of trouble at 48/5 after 8.4 overs.

With India in desperate need of a partnership, Gill and Parag got involved in a crucial stand of 54 runs off 40 balls for the fifth wicket. However, the duo failed to convert their starts into a big score and fell prey to Wanindu Hasaranga (2/29) in the 16 th over. Following their dismissals, Washington Sundar (25 off 18) and Ravi Bishnoi (8 off 8) took India to 137/9 in their allotted 20 overs. - Ends Also Read | Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal remind of Ganguly and Tendulkar: Robin Uthappa
