Significant rainfall has been recorded in the upper reaches of the Kelani River basin. Based on the prevailing rainfall conditions and an analysis of water-level gauge data from the Department of Irrigation, a warning has been issued that several low-lying areas in the Kelani River valley are at risk of minor flooding over the next 24 hours.
Accordingly, residents of low-lying areas within the Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Dehiowita, Eheliyagoda, Yatiyanthota and Bulathkohupitiya Divisional Secretariat divisions, as well as motorists travelling through these areas, have been urged to exercise extreme caution.
If heavy rainfall continues, the flooding could also spread to low-lying areas along the Kelani River downstream of Hanwella. The relevant disaster management authorities have therefore been instructed to take the necessary precautionary measures.
