Despite significant regional economic disruptions and pandemic-related hurdles since its founding in 2019, Mogo Studios has successfully established a robust production pipeline in Sri Lanka . As the studio makes its mark on international markets with a slate of nine market-ready titles featuring complete English materials, its primary mission extends beyond single releases: Mogo Studios is laying the foundational infrastructure for an entire national animation industry.
At the core of this long-term strategy is the studio’s in-house educational facility, launched to solve the local talent deficit by training young creators in animation and game development . "We've built our academy, and in just two years, we've already graduated 150 students, with close to 400 total either graduated or currently enrolled," said Sachitha Kalingamudali, General Manager at Mogo Studios, in an interview with Señal News. "We hire the best of them into our organization."
Leading the studio’s global debut is "The Secret of the Moonstone", Sri Lanka’s first animated feature film . Set in futuristic 2050 Sri Lanka, the story follows young protagonist Lucky and his friend Tania on a quest to locate a mystical moonstone to protect their village. "It's their journey through the forest, going through nature, talking about friendships and values, and addressing themes like pollution and global warming," Kalingamudali explained. Following the film's world premiere at FILMART in Hong Kong and its European debut at the VIEW Conference in Torino, global distribution rights are now locked across all major international territories ahead of its domestic theatrical launch in February 2027.
On the television side, Mogo Studios is halfway through production on "Shunya & Bindu", a 22-episode edutainment series aimed at preschoolers aged four to six . Written by an early childhood educator pursuing a PhD at Oxford, the 2D series takes a unique pedagogical approach by encouraging active problem-solving rather than prescriptive lessons. While European distribution is secured, global rights remain open for co-production and financing partnerships.
Supported by an internal gaming arm that is currently finalizing a side-scrolling platform title, Mogo Studios is anchoring its original properties around a comprehensive 360-degree franchise model, with plans to expand breakout characters into spin-off series and ancillary consumer products . "We got this whole ecosystem being built in Sri Lanka for the industry, and we're ready to do co-productions and animation services," Kalingamudali noted . "We need the support of the global industry to reach the level of the big players."
Regarding technological innovation, Mogo Studios maintains a clear boundary between human creativity and automation. While all artistic design remains entirely in-house, the team is evaluating AI tools strictly to streamline repetitive technical processes. "We haven't used AI in any of these projects, but we are looking into possibilities to handle repetitive tasks—such as file exports and naming conventions—that require no creative input, streamlining the pipeline to shorten production timelines," Kalingamudali concluded.
